Well, hello pals! It's been a busy few weeks since my last post, so ill jump right into explaining the comic above and giving news and whatnot.

So... afew days after posting the last update I received and email that has me pretty darn excited. The email was from the Annecy International Animation festival, and my film Aww Jeez had been invited to be screened in their 2011 graduate film category! This is a massive honor and I'll be trying to head over to France in June for the festival... BOOYAH!

Aww Jeez was also has the honor of being accepted into Melbourne towns own International Animation Festival which is equally as touching and rad!

Absence, Animations and Another Relevent A-word...

Its been too long since i last updated this ol' blog o mine, but after graduating uni, starting freelance work, working a day job and preparing a film for festival submissions, I've been somewhat sans time lately...

But I'm back and excited to show some things in the coming weeks.

So... Last year I graduated from RMITs Animation and Interactive Media with my grad film, a Stopmotion-Animation sitcom-parody about a regular slacker, dealing with his overly conservative father and a baby sitter that, well, isn't quite right.

Did i mention that the slacker is Jesus, God is his businessman father and the baby-sitter is the newly reformed Satan?

Cue: Hilarity... Or at least i hope so.

So basically as of now-ish most of my festival submitting for the film is complete and i'll be back bringing you comics. soon.

Man, it feels good to be back.

Yeah so a little diary comic inspired by the likes of Chris Downes and Lucy Knisley, basically summing up where my head is at the moment.

I'm tired from work and Grad film stuff and at the moment it's pretty clear that the workload can only intensify from here on in. I'm gonna look like a zombie come deadline time in October, but you know what, I'm okay with that...

..I could be stuck in an office doing Accounting and have to wear dress shoes every DAY.

fuck that shit I'll stick to my beatup Chuck Taylors and flannel shirts, and keep living life frame by frame.

In Which Our Hero Sets Out on a Crazy Mission...

Ok, let me paint the scene.

I've been awake for 40 hours straight, doing homework and screaming unnecessarily at my ds because a farfetch'd, the coolest most completely useless creature, wont appear on Pokemon Soul Silver (turns out you can only catch em during the day) I'm running largely on caffeine, tic toc biscuits and my own desire to see a particular assignment done and out of the way.Needless to say I'm not exactly in a prime mental state...On my desk next to me is a copy of Pat Grants "Lumpen No.5" (http://www.patgrantart.com/content/LSH/LSH.html) i slowly pull my glassy eyes away from the monotonous after effects assignment and stare madly at the zines beautifully stylised front cover. I sit transfixed for a good 10 minutes, running through my mind are stories from the wheeler center earlier that week, brave tales of self publishing comics, giant screen prints and various types of stationary.
Suddenly my eyes dart to a framed poster that has sat on my wall for the last 3 years ( as quality framed posters do)
and it's at that moment im struck with an idea...A voice in my head ringing out...

"Hey Greaney, Why don't you draw every single person you know onto a poster like that? That could be fun..."
It seemed genius! and why not? I drew my class in year 10, why not draw everyone i know it's the next logical step. I immediately tweeted this amazing idea and found approval form two uni mates, and my magical quest began.

I appreciate that it will be flat out impossible for me to draw everyone I've ever met in my life, stupid too, so I've devised a series of quest rules which must be followed to the tee, under penalty of disappointment in myself. These rules involve the people that have right to be drawn and the rules with which the work should be carried out.

THE QUEST RULES:
1. I have to draw everyone that I am in contact with at least once a week. a list will be made.

2. All people i have called friend in the last 3 years must be drawn.

3. All people that have had a lasting impact on my life, (that i have met in person) will be drawn.

4. All family members and pets will be drawn.
5. a minimum of two drawings per day must be sketched out and placed onto the board (see above image) (addendum- unless the time spent drawing interferes with MP production schedule)

6. all drawing must be stylized versions of the people they represent, no cutting corners, if the drawing doesn't resemble the figure it shall be removed and redrawn until such time as it does.
7. Unless requested, all poeple mentioned in rules 1-4 must be drawn. people my request to not be drawn (that's fair enough)

Drawing women week- Day 01

I realised lately that i fucking suck at drawing girls, especially when it comes to posing them for animation and lets face it the only thing more difficult then understanding women mentally, is drawing them in a way that doesn't make them look like men, with boobs. In Honor of this fact and that fact that some amazing artists have been inspiring me lately i bring you: Drawing girls week!

That's right kids every day this week your old pal Greaney will be drawing sketching or animating women in order to attempt to improve his own skillz (the z makes it cool) and will be updating you on the progress right here!

He is "El Chupacabra" and he's after the blood of your chickens.

The images above are two comparisons of the same (or similar) character that ive been knocking about lately, I love the design but unfortunately i honestly cant imagine what story he could really be used in...

On the plus side however I'm choosing to use Ol' El Chupacabra here, as the basis of a comparison that I've been mulling over in my head as of late. Hi, for those who dont know me im in my final year of an animation course, which I rather enjoy, and part of this final year is the fact that we must produce a peice of work that according to lecturers will "define us for the next 5-10 years" now i don't know about you but that seem like a tad bit of pressure.

I'm not the kind of guy that usually stresses about this sort of thing, or any sort of thing for that matter but I'm having a tad bit of trouble choosing the medium that I wanna work in...

fuck...

I love 2d animation, since i was a kid ive been drawing on things, drawing comic, drawing penises on tables in school, and drawing on my arms in sharpie because im forgetful and I'm too indecisive to decide on the tattoo i wanna get. Now this great love of drawing has led me to the obvious realm of 2d animation:

now the obvious positives of the 2dementional realm are the fact that i can go as insain and fucked up with it story wise as i want and still plausibly be able to produce it. Negatives are that everyone does 2d, so if the story doesn't straight away pop and draw the audience in you'll be forgotten and left sore and bleeding on the way side.

Claymation on the other hand is awesome and i love it, but its costly and extremely time consuming. Of course obvious advantages are that you are given a lot more leeway by audiences because for some reason they seem to appreciate the tedious nature of the medium.

A combination of the two would be the greatest thing ever, but unfortunately ive only got the short side of about 18 weeks to crank this out, and I'm not a magician.

There are two reasons i got into doing webcomics the first stems from my total laziness and inability to produce a level of work whose standarde was upto spead with todays AWESOME comic book industry, the other was that it's always seemed like it woulod be a good way to improve my illustration skills and posing for my other great love: animation. That being said i feel now-a days that if im gonna produce somthing out there with my name on it it might as well be at a standard that im happy with, i would rather update once every three weeks and be happy with the product then update everyday and look back and think "man i fucking suck" that being said im really just killing time till im back at uni.

A little doubt goes a long way...

Greetings friends,

this being my first blog entry I believe I may skip the formalities and jump straight to the interesting junk... what I'm currently working on.

My 2d run cycle is currently chugging along smoothly, some 25 frames out of 41 in (see below) and I'm immensely enjoying the experience that comes with animating by hand, even if my animation desk is getting really hot from its light, and feels like a frying pan...

Claymation is another new thing i am currently experiencing, and the entire process has really made me admire the skill and determination of studios like Laika (I know its technically not clay, shuddup) or Aardman, needless to say Im loving every moment of the experience, the medium is like crack cocain, and the more I have the more i need.

the hand that just wont stay attached, next time im makin hand armatures...

Somthing especially fun about the clay/puppet medium is the constant environment of problem solving that it entails, if you're not rigging somthing, you're trying to optimise your lighting, while trying to attain believable movement blah blah blah...

a rig worthy of a drunken engineer, thats right ladies 100% chicken wire...

thats it from me for now, im tired and i still havn't got onto my 3d work yet... and ive gotta finishes those pencil tests and paint backgrounds and edit alterna.......... zzzzz
